Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
