The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical biological terror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
